ATCHISON MAN ARRESTED ON AGGRAVATED ASSAULT ON LEO

An Atchison man, Ryan Marcus Brownfield, 24, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail today July 2, 2015 on a Jackson County Warrant for four felony charges. Brownfield was charged with attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated battery, obstruction of official duty and fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer. Bond has been set at $250,000.00.

Brownfield’s charges stem from a March 12, 2015 incident where a Jackson County Deputy Sheriff escaped injury during a police vehicle pursuit that originated in Atchison County.  The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received notification of a police pursuit in progress in Jefferson County around 5 p.m on March 12th.  The pursuit was reported to be headed west towards Jackson County from Valley Falls on 16 Hwy.

A Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper was attempting to stop a Nissan Armada allegedly driving by Brownfield that was later found to be stolen from an Atchison car lot. A Jackson County Deputy at approximately 5:25 p.m. on March 12th attempted to deflate the tires of the suspect vehicle by deploying stop sticks in the 16000 blk. of Hwy 16 east of Denison in Jackson County.  However, Brownfield allegedly left the roadway in the vehicle in an attempt to strike the deputy.  The deputy was able to maneuver out of the way of the vehicle without being injured.  The suspect vehicle immediately collided with the pursuing trooper’s patrol vehicle which disabled the trooper’s car. The suspect vehicle turned back to the east crossing in Jefferson County, where Brownfield was forced off the roadway and bailed from the vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter with the help of a KHP K-9 and was transported to the Atchison County Jail.  The pursuing trooper was medically accessed and released from the Holton Community Hospital the night of the incident.
