DEPUTY ESCAPES INJURY DURING CHASE

A Jackson County Deputy Sheriff escaped injury during a police vehicle pursuit Thursday evening that originated in Atchison County.  The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received notification of a police pursuit in progress in Jefferson County around 5 p.m.  The pursuit was reported to be heading west towards Jackson County from Valley Falls on 16 Hwy.

A Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper was attempting to stop a Nissan Armada that was later found to be stolen from an Atchison car lot.  A Jackson County Deputy at approximately 5:25 p.m. attempted to deflate the tires of the suspect vehicle by deploying stop sticks in the 16000 blk. of Hwy 16 east of Denison in Jackson County.  However, the driver of the vehicle allegedly left the roadway in an attempt to strike the deputy with the vehicle.  The deputy was able to maneuver out of the way of the vehicle without being injured.  The suspect vehicle immediately collided with the pursuing trooper’s patrol vehicle which disabled the trooper’s car. The suspect vehicle turned back to the east crossing in Jefferson County, where the driver was forced off the roadway and bailed from the vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter with the help of a KHP K-9 and was transported to the Atchison County Jail.  The suspect was identified as Ryan Marcus Brownfield, 23, of Atchison. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is forwarding charges on Brownfield to the Jackson County Attorney’s Office.  The pursuing trooper was medically accessed and released from the Holton Community Hospital Thursday night.
