 Stay alert to seasonal scammers

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. (JASO) – Citizens need to be ever vigilant in being alert to scammers. We always need to be alert to scammers who want to take advantage of our hard earned money. I just would like to take a moment to remind everyone that scammers can hit you from many different angles.  You must be alert to any telephone call where someone tries to solicit you in some way.  They may be wanting your personal or bank account information, or even sell you a product in a too good to be true deal.

Not only do you need to be alert to scammers via phone calls, mailings, emails and texts, but you need to be alert to door-to-door solicitors that come to your residence.  Personally, I wouldn’t do business with anyone who approached me in this manner.  When you have a need, find a reputable company to take care of those needs yourself and do not rely on those who solicit your business.  If it seems too good to be true, it is.  Many of these people are from out of state, making it difficult to find them and to get your money back if needed.

Since this is the storm season in Kansas, be aware of those who come to your house to perform various tasks.  Some examples would be roofers, asphalt paving and tree services.  Many times scammers will follow the storms and will offer free roof inspections, they will tell you they are working in the area.  Scammers will tell you your roof is damaged and in need of replacement even if it is not. Many times they will take your money and provide a poor service or leave the area with your money altogether. Best practice is to get multiple bids from reputable companies. Some of these companies and individuals are banned from working in Kansas.  The Kansas Attorney General’s Office is a good resource to use. Roofers must have a valid registration certificate from the State of Kansas before doing any roofing business in Kansas.

Don’t pay in cash, don’t pay for the whole project upfront and don’t pay for the total project until it is finished and you are completely satisfied with the work done.  Always check with your insurance company first before any work that is caused from damage.

Many cities have ordinances regulating solicitors who must have a permit and must have their information on file with the city. Always make sure before you have any work done to have a contract in place.

Do your research and if you have any questions or concerns, you can also contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 785-364-2251.  Sheriff Tim Morse
