JACKSON AND SHAWNEE COUNTY SHERIFFS TEAM UP AGAINST CRIMINALS

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office have teamed up in a collaborative effort to solve crimes and catch criminals. Investigators and command staff from both counties have been cross deputized. Cross deputization is common across the nation for law enforcement agencies to share resources and manpower. Sheriff Morse has desired for sometime to enter into a such a cross deputization program with Shawnee County. Sheriff Morse says “Criminals and criminal activity don’t necessarily stop at the county line.” Shawnee County being more populated is the source of many of the suspects and fugitives being sought by Jackson County. Likewise, Jackson County being a destination county also is a location in which fugitives from Shawnee County can be found. Sheriff Morse says “It is important for law enforcement to be able to use the resources it has been entrusted with to protect the public.” Relationships between agencies are essential in reducing crime and capturing criminals. Sheriff Morse and Sheriff Hill were able to work out the details for this program on a recent visit to Washington, D.C. The program can be beneficial to residents of both counties in a variety of ways. Law enforcement can share intelligence information and work together in teaming up against those that are trafficking narcotics between counties. Other crimes such as burglaries and thefts can be greatly reduced with agencies partnering together and simply doing good police work. Sheriff Morse says “There is no limit to what can be accomplished when the channels of cooperation between agencies are opened up. We are dealing with many of the same criminals who are committing crimes in both counties.”
