On May 7, 2018, at approximately 8:50 P.M., the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspicious vehicle on P road near 246th road. The caller gave a description of the vehicle and stated the car was traveling northbound on P road. A short time later, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy located a vehicle matching the description near 262nd road (Jackson Heights) and US 75 Highway. The vehicle was parked on the shoulder of the road with the flashers on. When the deputy pulled up behind the vehicle to check on it, the driver began to drive away. The deputy saw an alleged violation on the car and conducted a traffic stop. During the traffic stop the driver refused to provide any information to deputies. After attempting to get the driver to comply with commands, the driver allegedly refused and placed the car in drive and drove away, doing a U-turn and going southbound towards Holton. Deputies pursued the vehicle at speeds of 60 mph. During the pursuit, the suspect nearly hit multiple vehicles head-on. A Kansas Highway Patrol aircraft assisted with the pursuit. The vehicle was stopped just inside Holton, with deputies utilizing their vehicles to stop the suspect from turning around and continuing the pursuit. While stopping the vehicle, the suspect backed into a deputy’s patrol vehicle. The driver, Cory Steltenpohl, 32, of Hiawatha, was arrested on multiple charges and transported to the Jackson County Jail.
