Sgt. Travis Spiker Medal of Valor Winner

Sgt. Travis Spiker receives medal of valor

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. (JASO)-Sheriff Tim Morse reports that Sgt. Travis Spiker has been awarded the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Medal of Valor for an incident that occurred in 2017. On December 3, 2017, Sgt. Travis Spiker was on patrol in the central district in Jackson County when he was dispatched to assist the Holton Police Department on a domestic dispute that led him to 802 Ohio Street. An armed female involved in the altercation was taken into custody for questioning and placed into Sgt. Spiker’s patrol vehicle. Sgt. Spiker and other members of the police department started taking gunfire from the residence and later from a second story window pining Sgt. Spiker behind his vehicle. Sgt. Spiker’s vehicle was riddled with gun fire. Sgt. Spiker knowing the female’s life was in jeopardy and under the threat of gun fire. He was able to enter his vehicle from the passenger door and crawled over a variety of law enforcement equipment, mobile data terminal, radio equipment to get to his driver’ seat exposing himself in direct view of the assailant. Sgt. Spiker was able to remove the woman from the gunfire to safety. Sheriff Morse said, “This award was a long time coming, and Sgt. Spiker is a true hero and is a person of courage and bravery.”
